Setting Up Your Door Locks
Once your locks have been installed, your dealer will add them to your g! system. After your dealer has added the locks for your home, you need to manage the users and the passcodes. Refer to the User Settings Interface Instructions (a separate document) for managing users and passcodes. You must first create users and assign passcodes before you can effectively use the door lock interface.
Locks appear as part of Security and are accessed from the g! Main Menu by pressing the SECURITY icon (figure 1).
After selecting SECURITY, your locks will be displayed in one of three ways; Single Lock (figure 2), Grouped Locks (figure 3), and Tabbed Groups (figure 4). Locks and security partitions may be mixed together at your dealer’s discretion. Operation based on these display options is described below. If you would like to change the way your locks are displayed, please contact your dealer.
When a single lock has been displayed, the color of the icon and the position of the highlight changes to reflect the lock status. Figure 5 shows a single lock icon where the door is locked. Figure 6 shows the same lock in the unlocked state.
Pressing the closed lock on the lower-left secures the lock and turns the icon blue. The open lock on the lower right unlocks the lock and turns the icon gray. Depending on the settings for the lock, pressing the unlock button may display a 10-digit keypad for you to enter a valid door lock passcode before g! will unlock the door (figure 7).
When presented with the 10-digit keypad simply enter a valid 4-digit code to unlock the door. For convenience, the keypad remains active until the correct four digits are entered. To clear the keypad, simply touch the screen somewhere outside of the keypad.
Touching the top 2/3 (figure 8) of the icon will access the lock’s Event Log page (figure 9).
The Event Log Page
The Event Log page allows you to conveniently review activity at the door lock including:
Unlocking Events are displayed by:° User – g! correlates the user code to the user and displays the user name° Manual – when the lock is opened manually using the key or interior latch
Controller – when the lock is opened by the controller without a code
Locking Events are displayed by:° Controller – g! secures the lock for you
Manual – you secured the lock with a key or the interior latch
Auto-lock – when the lock re-secures itself
Alert Events are shown with an exclamation point and indicate:° Bolt Jammed – the deadbolt failed to completely deploy
User Code Added – someone added a user code to the lock either manually or via the g! controller
Low Battery – the lock’s batteries are getting low and should be replaced
Invalid User Code – an invalid user code was entered at the lock (after 5 attempts)
When an Alert Event has been received, g! displays an exclamation point next to the event and the lock icon (figure 10).
Alerts can be cleared by pressing the Clear Alerts button. g! maintains the record of the alert by “graying” out the alert icon. You can review the Event Log at any time by scrolling the page using the scroll bar on the right side of the screen.
Most items in the Event Log can be acted upon with some dealer programming. For example, g! could send you an email when your child enters their code into the lock letting you know they are home. Please contact your dealer and discuss with them what types of actions you might benefit from.
If you have many locks in your home, it may be more convenient for you to group them under one icon. In the example below, we grouped all of the locks in the main house and the locks in the guest house under separate icons. As with a Single Lock, when the icon is blue, the locks are secured (figure 11). A gray icon indicates that one or more locks are unsecured (figure 12).
Pressing the SECURE ALL portion of the icon will lock all door locks in the group. Once all of the door locks report back as locked, the icon will turn blue. Tapping the to part of the button will chance to a summary page of all door locks in the group (figure 13).
From the Group Summary page, you can verify the battery level of all locks and lock or unlock individual door locks. You may also lock all door locks by pressing SECURE ALL and unlock all door locks that do not require a passcode to be entered from a g! interface by pressing UNSECURE ALL. You may view the Event Log for an individual lock by pressing the corresponding EVENT LOG button (figure 14).
This Event Log works the same way as the Single Lock status screen and you should refer to the instructions above for operation. To close this screen press the X button or press EVENT LOG again.
Grouped Locks provide a second way of looking at lock events. Selecting the HISTORY button in the upper right corner changes your display to the History Graph page. The History Graph is a timeline that can be scrolled and shows the status and events for all locks in the group. To zoom in (figure 15), use the cursor above the scrolling bar shown in figure 15.1.
To move the graph, use the scrolling bar at the bottom (if you have many locks, you may see a scrolling bar on the right-hand side too) or the Page tabs on either end (figure 15.1). Events are indicated by the “tree” points.
By touching a tree with your finger or moving the cursor slider at the bottom of the screen over the tree, a pop-up box will appear that provides data about the tree (figure 16).
Tabbed groups are generally used in large homes to organize door locks and security partitions into more easily managed groups. Figure 17 shows a g! interface with two tabbed groups; “Main House” and “Guest House”. By selecting the tab at the bottom of the screen you see only the items associated with that tab. Tabs organize Single door locks, Grouped door locks, and security partitions in any combination. The door locks work exactly as described above, the Tabbed Groups are simply a way to help organize visibility.
Immediately after pressing SECURE or UNSECURE, you’ll see a green hourglass next to the key icon (figure 18). This simply means that g! is communicating with the locks. Depending on the action being executed and the configuration of your wireless network, the working status indicator will go away somewhere between a few seconds and as long as a minute.
Due to a variety of factors, it is possible for g! to lose track of the status of a door lock. When g! doesn’t know whether a door lock is secured or unsecured, an orange question mark will show up next to the key (figure 19). This situation will rectify itself the next time g! checks the lock, or you can send a secure or unsecure command to the door lock. When it responds, the status will update itself automatically. If you have this display and cannot clear it by sending secure/unsecure commands, you should contact your ELAN dealer.
Until the issue preventing g! from communicating with the door lock is resolved, the door lock will continue to operate as a standalone device. g! will not log Events and will not be able to operate the device until communications are restored

What Our Clients Say
We are proud to share the following testimonials from some of our amazing clients.
Awesome experience from start to finish. We built a new home complete with lighting, audio and security. Our favorite application where the seasonal blinds used to create a three season screen porch. Joe and his team went beyond our expectations and highly recommend this company.
Sound Communications has courteous & knowledgeable staff that provide solutions for many of my clients Audio/Video, security, surveillance, motorized window covering, & home automation projects. They are quick to respond to questions and always have the right products & solutions for the clients needs. The Sound Communications staff provides excellent service & training after the sale to make sure the clients are comfortable using their new products and services.
We have been using Sound Communications for our home automation system in Nisswa for over 10 years. We have been happy with the installation and features of the system. We did have to get the system updated multiple times due to technology refresh. Sound Communications has always responded to questions/trouble calls in a timely manner and are able to integrate security systems, heating/AC thermostat control, as well as the local networking equipment so it all works together seamlessly. Granted, it may be a bit pricey for some of the equipment but it is high end items.
We knew we had a difficult task when finding a company to hook up wireless audio and video to 9 dental operatories and 4 additional waiting room TV's that seamlessly connect to the streaming service of our choice AND and have wireless headphone connectivity AND keep it simple enough to use for 25 different employees...... and Sound Communication Inc TOTALLY DELIVERED! This is our second dental office with 9 operatories. We needed the system to be thorough, seamless, simple and versatile (unlike our first office). This one blows away our first one away. All of the girls caught on to the software/app that controls ALL of the video with a few clicks fairly quickly. It doesn't cut out, it can be controlled from our phones if need be, and the options are as plentiful. Tate was extremely accommodating and easy to work with. His communication with all pricing and sticking within our budget was fantastic. Couldn't be happier with the company and we are excited to have them come re-do our entire other office (that wasn't completed by them). We were so happy with them that they also did our entire security system. The same follows with that - simple, effective, and thorough. Couldn't be happier with Tate and the team at Sound Communications. If anybody wants to see for themselves, come on by!
Very knowledgeable staff. Seems there isn't much that they can't do related to high tech automation installations system integration of blinds, lighting, video, audio, irrigation, heating, gate controls....
“I would highly recommend Sound Communications. Technology can be extremely frustrating, especially when not familiar. Their willingness to walk through all options, make smart recommendations, and then their responsiveness when issues do arise is impeccable. From ownership to every member doing installation, it’s obvious Sound Communications instills integrity, honesty, and provides the necessary training to all of their staff to meet all of your needs. As a business owner myself, with a belief that a company is only as good as it’s people, clearly Sound Communications would be a smart choice for you!”
To whom it may concern
In 2008 my wife and I had the privilege of working with Joe Diemer from Sound Communications while building our new cabin on Gull Lake, Joe came highly recommended by our neighbor, Chip Foster, who had previously worked with him. My company is in the acoustical business and has worked with many firms in the AV industry.
Joe, in comparison to these firms, has far surpassed my expectations in each task he’s performed and continues to complete numerous projects for both family and friends of mine.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
It is my pleasure to recommend Joe Diemer of Sound Communications Inc. During the past eight years, I have worked directly with Joe and he has completed numerous projects for me. Joe installed multiple TV iPod players to allow me to play my music in every room of the house; you know how I like my music. Joe also installed the best universal remotes that are so easy to use, even my wife brags that she can use them!
One project in particular illustrates my complete trust in Joe’s work. My wife, Tonya, was not comfortable with our security system in Dodge City, so I flew Joe to Kansas and had him completely redo my home security system. I didn’t consider using anyone else. We also had Joe install the iPod system, with universal remotes, throughout my house in Dodge City.
Joe responds immediately to all my questions and/or problems. His work is first-class and is always professional. Joe reconfirms appointments and as a courtesy, his shoes are always off when he’s working in your home. Joe takes pride in his work; he always neatly ties, labels and organizes the wiring on every project.
I highly recommend Joe Diemer of Sound Communications Inc. Thanks to Joe, I have the smartest house, with the dumbest owner in the neighborhood!
I want to personally thank you for your extraordinary service and great products that you have provided for my personal needs as well as my business over the past 17 years. I have been extremely pleased with having you and your team members deliver and support my electronic needs including audio, security, audio-visual and other electronic solutions. Furthermore, you have always been there for me and have been extremely helpful from start to finish; including assessing my needs, handling the procurement process, managing the installation, as well as servicing after everything is completed. Time and time again, you have displayed your extensive knowledge, win-win attitude and your exceptional customer service. While it is easy to find someone to sell you a product, it is hard to find someone that will optimize and fully support the solution after the sale.
In summary, I will always value our business relationship and wish you continued success.
Dan and Judy McAthie
When we built our new home, Joe Diemer, Sound Communications, installed our sound system, security cameras, and central vacuum. He also installed an Elan System which integrates our cameras, lighting, security, climate control, and irrigation system.
Not only do we love the system and its ease of use, but the professionalism and courtesy that Joe has shown us has been exceptional.
He is always available for questions, responds promptly to any service issues we have and is very helpful and courteous. He is very knowledgeable in each of the areas and has made recommendations that improve performance and ease of use with the system.
We would highly recommend Joe and his company for any sound or communication needs.
I am pleased to offer this letter of reference on behalf of Joe Diemer of Sound Communications. I have worked with Joe over the past four years as he designed, installed and serviced all of the audio, video and computer systems on our family property in Crosslake, Minnesota, which includes three newly built structures: our Lodge, Cabin, and loft style Carriage House.
From the outset of our project, Joe was enthusiastic and clearly knowledgeable about the products and technology needed to fulfill our needs which includes a full house sound system, multiple television/video set ups, and computer networking to serve all of our buildings. Joe has been very accessible to discuss and talk through questions that we may have regarding our systems, and is very accommodating when it comes to scheduling a service call when necessary. Over the course of the past four years, Joe has resolved issues as needed; including the investigation and resolution of problems we faced as the result of a recent lightning strike.
In addition to his professional qualifications and expertise, Joe has a great personality and temperament for working with those less versed in the world and language of technology. He has been very patient in explaining, more than once, the workings of our systems and offering tutorials whenever needed. It is very reassuring to know that he is only a phone call away.
I would highly recommend Joe Diemer as someone who is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, a problem solver and a great person with whom to work.
My husband and I met Joe Diemer of Sound Communications in during the reconstruction of our lake home. Joe exceeded our expectations in every aspect. He listened to what we wanted for audiovisual, security and music at the home and tailored a system to our request. Beyond customizing the system, he installed and has provided phenomenal service to us.
I’d like to note that while we were reconstructing the Minnesota lake home we were at our permanent home in Pennsylvania. Joe is a professional. He was able to communicate either with us or our contractor as needed to ‘make it happen’. Joe provided us with two outdoor cameras, a whole-house music system, surround sound in family room, TV’s throughout home, blue ray, I-pod docking and wireless internet. The wiring was completed and electronics put in place and ready for our arrival! Upon our arrival, Joe was very patient and spent a good deal of time showing us how everything worked.
What must be reiterated is Joe’s phenomenal service. Calls, texts or emails are returned very quickly (in my experience in less than an hour – or immediately!). We are not tech-savvy and this has been a tremendous benefit.
We would recommend Joe/Sound Communications to anyone contemplating a custom electronics system.
